UNIVERSITY OF NAIROBI: Automated Winch System
The Automated Winch System is a solar-powered student project that allows people in the rural areas to collect water from wells using minimal effort. The project which was conceived in 5 days has been funded till now by bloc: , the only organization in Wales specifically representing the interests of those engaged creatively with new technology.
We talked to representatives of the project Paul Granjon, and Peter Hathaway. They said that they used the Ideo Human Centred Design Toolkit , a free innovation guide for NGO’s and Social Enterprises, to come up with solutions for problems they found in Kwale District in Kenya. They held a brainstorming session with people in Kwale and Peter then came up with concepts of solutions to the problems. These included, a clay-made mosquito killer, and an umbrella which could act as a vessel for collecting water. They have been doing some amazing stuff, which we hope gets made into products which can eventually be implemented.
