philips livable cities award: rainwater collection project for thirsty yemen wins!

Last year we wrote about the philips livable cities award. You can read more about that on this page. Three Award grants totaling €125,000 were on the line. One overall winning idea from any of the three categories outlined below received a grant of €75,000, while the two additional ideas received grants of €25,000 each. The overall winner is Sabrina Faber who came up with a project to aggregate rain-water using a centuries old method already used by the Yemeni people. Second-place winner Manuel Rapoport‘s project will create safe, portable recreational areas in Buenos Aires, Argentina, by closing streets to motorized traffic on weekends and during public holidays.

Third placed winner was James Kityo from Kampala, Uganda, who won €25,000 for his project ‘Shade Stand’ – which aims to create shelters in Kampala to offer protection and provide health education. Read his full story here: James Kityo – 3 winner
