A brilliant new website, Fundar, is solely dedicated to tracking down how and where the taxes that Mexicans pay are used. The site includes brilliant analysis of government spending such as this analysis of the general public accounts of 2010 to reveal how government spending has affected the rise in maternal mortalities.
The site also has brilliant visualizations which can help to better understand the data. The site is written in Spanish so we would suggest that you get a good translator to better understand the path-breaking information on the site.
Governments need to stand up to transparency, and we can only hope other countries follow this lead to set up their own. Another good example of a similar site is Mzalendo in Kenya, which keeps track of daily occurrences at the Parliament of Kenya.
