CHIKA OKAFOR: ‘Hawker Back To School’
One of the highlights of MakerFaire Africa 2010 in Nairobi, was Chika Okafor‘s first time public showing of his new project – the Hawker Back To School Bags. His idea behind the whole project is to enable, not only hawkers, but also relief agencies, with a way for them to be able to carry, and then distribute supplies easily.
We spoke to him, and he showed us how the bag transforms from a simple back-carriage to a unique frontwards facing ‘hawker-bag’. His motivation behind this is to enable hawkers (street sellers) to ply their trade with ease and thus avail them the opportunity to educate themselves, train and retrain themselves to further empower themselves for present and future semi-skilled and skilled job opportunities.
Through earlier research the team at Ufahari also came across the Spaza-De-Move-On which has a similar motivation but a different concept. You can read about that here.
